Nain rugs are among the finest hand-knotted Persian rugs and originate from the central Iranian city of Nain. They stand for exceptional precision, light color palettes, and highly refined weaving. Their elegant appearance makes Nain rugs one of the most distinguished provenances among classic Persian city rugs.
The city of Nain is located on the edge of Iran’s central desert region and belongs to the province of Isfahan. Compared to older weaving centers, carpet production in Nain began relatively late, at the beginning of the 20th century, yet quickly gained international recognition. Very fine Nain rugs can reach knot densities ranging from several hundred thousand to over one million knots per square meter. Due to the high level of craftsmanship required, especially 6 La and 4 La qualities are considered rare collector’s pieces.

Materials: Wool, Silk, and Foundation

The pile of Nain rugs is typically woven from very fine sheep’s wool or cork wool. Silk is often used for outlines, light areas, or decorative details, adding depth and a subtle sheen to the design. The foundation usually consists of cotton, while especially fine pieces may be woven on a silk foundation. This combination of materials enables the characteristic clarity and precision of Nain rugs.
In terms of design, Nain rugs are rooted in classical Persian compositions. Typical features include harmonious medallion layouts surrounded by finely executed floral ornaments. The lines are clear and precise, and the overall composition appears calm and well balanced.
